NAme Calling
This is an example of name-calling because it is smearing and poking fun at a certain target. Name-calling seeks to degrade the opponent by putting down their reputation. The story behind this is about a football player named Steven Gerrard, whose team was close to winning the top football league in England, the Barclays Premier League. Before a crucial match against equal favourites Chelsea, Gerrard commented, “We don’t let this slip, we go again.” Unfortunately and ironically, Gerrard literally slipped in the match versus Chelsea, which led to Chelsea scoring due to his fumble. Rivals of Liverpool were quick to catch his error, and to this day it is a popular chant against Liverpool and Gerrard. Such chants that make fun of his error are smearing his reputation as a footballer and putting down his abilities.
